What is On the Lid Lifts the Eyes: The Winged Eyeliner

The winged eyeliner is one look that can make or break the entire finished face.  After all it consists of just drawing a line and a winged end. However, sometimes that winged end looks like a worm crawling out of the corner of your lash line and ready to be pulled out by crow’s feet.  Talk about the early bird catching the worm!

The best example of a really good winged eyeliner application is from the show Supernatural. For those of you who are fans of the show, we have been introduced to Crowley’s mum, Rowena played by Scottish actress Ruth Connell, a witch of a mother!  Crowley happens to be King of Hell and mother Rowena sees the advantage of this and starts manipulating him in ways only a bitchy witch could!

Getting back to winged eyeliner for the retro look, this type of eyeliner should always go upward and lift the eyes.

This means you won’t completely follow your natural lash line to the end; you will depart from it to keep the wing on the lid as you see in the pictures below.  Also notice how the eyeliner stays mostly on the fleshy lid area and if extended it is out of the corner of the orbital ridge or indentation of the eye rather than the lash line.

This may be a departure from the usual "fashion" technique, but this is why winged eyeliner in movies and television looks a bit different.

If you would like to see an in-depth explanation of this makeup application and a look influenced by the witch herself, Rowena, check out the tutorial below.
